231,762. Enzesfelder Metallwerke Akt.-Ges. Aug. 1, 1924, [Convention date]. Variable - speed g e a r i n g ; clutches, claw.-Means for facilitating the engagement of clutch teeth in change-speed gearing consist of auxiliary friction clutches w<1>, w<2> combined as a symmetrical unit sliding with and also relatively to a svmmetrical double-ended claw clutch sleeve K. In the arrangement shown, A is the driving-shaft, B a. lay shaft, and C the driven shaft. The clutch sleeve K with dog ends k<2>, k<4> is splined on the shaft C and is adapted to engage dogs k<1> on the shaft A for direct driving, or dogs k<3> on a gear n<1> for a reduced speed. The auxiliary friction cones w<1>, w<2> slide together on the sleeve K, being coupled by a member w. These cones are restrained against axial movement relatively to the sleeve K by ball-ended spring bolts p in the sleeve engaging the cones. On moving the sleeve K to right or left, the cone w' or w<1> comes into contact with a female cone f, and the clutch dogs about to be engaged are brought to nearly the same rotational speed. Further movement of the sleeve K causes the bolts p to slip inwards out of action, releasing the pressure between the cone clutch surfaces. Continued sliding of the eleeve K then brings the dogs k<4> or k<2> into full engagement.
