Abstract
225,819. Enzesfelder Metallwerke Akt.-Ges. Dec. 3, 1923, [Convention date]. Facilitating changing speed.- To facilitate, the engagement of gear and clutch teeth in changespeed gearing, auxiliary friction clutches are combined each with two sets of spring plungers. In the arrangement shown, A is the driving-shaft, B a lay shaft, and C the driven shaft. A pinion q<1> integral with its sleeve k is splined on the shaft C and is adapted to be meshed with a wheel such as m<1> on the lay shaft. The auxiliary friction clutch member n<1> turns loosely and has peripheral teeth x meshing with the wheel m<1>. It is restrained from' moving axially by a ball-ended spring dog p<1> within the shaft C. On moving the sleeve k to the right, the coned friction surfaces come into contact and the gear q<1> and shaft C are driven at the proper speed for engaging the gear teeth without shock. Further movement to the right causes the dog p<1> to slip inwards out of action, releasing the pressure between the cone friction clutch surfaces. The toothed gear q<1> then slips relatively to the gear m<1> sufficiently to allow engagement of their respective teeth. At the end of the movement of the sleeve k, the teeth x of the, member n<1> move clear of the wheel m<1>. In the body of the pinion q<1> are other radial plungers s<1>, which are normally pressed inwards by a spring ring r<1> so that they engage in grooves t<1> in the shaft A. On the movement to the right of the sleeve k, these plungers s<1> ride out of the grooves t<1> and press the spring ring r<1> outwards into a recess z<1> in the member n'. On the return to the left of the sleeve k to disengage the toothed wheels, the ring r<1> engages and drags the member n<1> also to the right with turning until the main dogs p' snap into engagement. On the other end of the splined sleeve k are clutch teeth i adapted to engage like teeth i on the end of the shaft A for direct driving. Here are again the main ball-ended dogs p which hold a friction clutch member w<1> in engagement with a hollow element w long enough for the teeth i and j to come to the same speed. On disengagement of the dogs p, the teeth j, j turn relatively sufficiently to engage without shock. Here again are the other dogs s pressed by spring ring r into taper grooves y in the sleeve k. The ring r on complete engagement of the clutch is pressed into engagement with the element w in a recess d therein holding in position the member w<1> which has been released from the sleeve k.
