Abstract
986,817. Differential gear. DANA CORPORATION. Feb. 26, 1962, No. 7502/62. Heading F2D. In a limited-slip bevel differential gear in a motor vehicle, the usual side wheels 19, 20 transmit drive torque through drive members 23, 29 connected to the axle shafts 17, and bi-directional facial cam teeth 27 drivingly coupling the side wheels 20 to the drive member 29 actuate, in response to driving torque, a friction clutch 34, 35 which is arranged, independently of the differential cage 10, between the drive members. The drive member 29 is connected to its axle shaft through splines 31, a freely rotatable sleeve 30, splines 33, and a member 32. The other side wheel, 19, is splined directly on its respective drive member 23. The friction clutch comprises interleaved friction plates 34, 35 respectively splined on the sleeve 30 and the drive member 23. The axial clutch thrust is taken by snap rings 55, 57 respectively abutting the friction plates and the side wheel 19. A further snap ring 53 prevents clutching action by the member 32.
