Abstract

878,700. Differential gear; ratchet clutches. FERGUSON RESEARCH Ltd., HARRY. March 22, 1960 [April 15, 1959], No. 12717/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] A vehicle transmission system comprises an engine driving differential gears for front and rear axles through a reversing gear and a controlled differential having two one-way clutches. Each clutch has a running and an overrunning member such that the running member of one and the overrunning member of the other rotate with the differential input member, the other two members rotating with a propeller shaft. Between each pair of clutch members are a friction clutch and a co-operating presser with a helical connection to one of the members and an hydraulic abutment such that hydraulic liquid may be released rendering the abutment inoperative and disabling the clutch. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 drive is transmitted from the engine by chain 13, toothed wheel 14 and epicyclic reversing gear 4-7 to differential input member 1. Planet carrier 5 may be moved on splines 6A by lever 9 on reversing shaft 9A to give forward gear when planet wheel 5A meshes with teeth 6A on sleeve 12 and 4A an annulus 4, reverse when gear 5B on the planet carrier engages a fixed ring 7A and neutral in the intermediate position. The differential unit drives propeller shafts 10, 10A to the front and rear differentials. Shaft 10 has a gear 20 on it which drives a parallel hollow shaft 22 which forms the inner members of the two one-way clutches. An extended sleeve 11 attached to the differential input member 1 surrounds shaft 10 and has four gears on it, 23, 25 meshing with gears 24, 26 on shaft 22 which form part of the outer members 30, 31 of the two one-way clutches. As gear 23 is larger in diameter and gear 25 smaller than gear 20 member 30 overruns shaft 22 but shaft 22 overruns member 31. The clutches also comprise pressers 32, 33 on helical threads such that the drag of friction plates 60, 62 when overrunning keeps them apart but should excessive differential action occur, as when a wheel spins, the running member will no longer be overrun and the presser will move inwards on the helical thread and push the friction plates 41 against an abutment 40 to limit the differential action. Normally the abutments 40 are held by hydraulic fluid in the chamber 45 between them, but the pressure may be released by cable-operated lever 72 in which case the movement of the pressers is limited by shoulders 63 on shaft 22. An interconnection between the reversing gear and lever 72 may be fitted to ensure that the one-way clutches are rendered inoperative for travelling in reverse
