Abstract

549,633. Reverse gearing; ratchet clutches. SINCLAIR, H. May 24, 1941, No. 12544/42. Divided out of 6678/41. [Class 80 (ii)] A pair of shafts 20A, 21A, Fig. 1, which are driven from a single shaft 24A through reverse gearing are connected to the latter by reversible freewheel clutches 34A, 3bA, and means are provided so that the freewheel clutches are reversed when the gearing is reversed. As shown, compound gears 22A, 22B, and 23A, 23B, connected to the driven shafts 20A, 21A, by the freewheel clutches 34A, 35A, gear with one another and with gears 27A, 28A free on the driving shaft 24A. A clutch member 33 splined to the shaft 24A may be clutched either to gear 27A or 28A, to give forward or reverse driving to the shafts 20A, 21A. The striking yokes 55, 56, Fig. 5, controlling the freewheel clutches, and the yoke 57 controlling the clutch element 33 may be carried on a single operating shaft 58, the yokes 55, 56, being yieldingly actuated through springs 62, 63. Each reversible freewheel clutch comprises a sleeve 44, Fig. 3, fixed to a gear wheel and having two rows of clutch teeth 45, 46. A nut 39 carried on helical ribs 38 on the shaft has clutch teeth 43 and oppositely directed pivoted pawls 47, 48 to co-operate with the teeth 45, 46. It also has spur teeth 53. A slidable controlling sleeve 49 has teeth 52 engaging the teeth 53 and axially spaced teeth 54, circumferentially staggered thereto. A ring 40 fixed to the shaft has teeth 51. For forward driving the sleeve 49 is moved to the forward position F. Engagement between the teeth 51, 54, is such that the nut moves to the position in which 43, 46, engage. Should the shaft overrun the nut 39 moves to its extreme left hand position, Fig. 3, and free wheeling is permitted. When the sleeve 49 is in the reverse position R the shaft is driven by the engagement of the teeth 45 with the teeth 43, further movement of the nut 39 being prevented by the engagement of the teeth 51, 52. Should the shaft overrun then the nut 39 moves to the extreme right-hand position and freewheeling in this direction results. Specification 513,974 is referred to.
