Abstract
814,170. Positive clutches. TILTMAN LANGLEY Ltd., [formerly TILTMAN LANGLEY LABORATORIES Ltd], Aug. 17, 1955 [Aug. 18, 1954], No. 24063/54. Class 80 (2). A spring engaged claw clutch is disengaged by stopping a control member rotatably mounted on the driving member and having ratchet teeth co-operating with similar teeth on the driven member. A driving member 2 is slidably keyed to the driving shaft 6 and has claw teeth 18 engageable with similar teeth 28 on a driven gear 20 rotatably mounted on bush 21 on the shaft 6. A spring 14 acts through collar 12 and cup member 10 to hold the teeth 18, 28 engaged. A control wheel 36 is rotatably mounted on driving member 2 and has ratchet teeth 34 co-operating with similar teeth 32 on a ring 30 rigid with the gear 20. Engagement of a solenoid operated pawl with teeth 42 on control wheel 36 causes the ratchet teeth 34, 32 to disengage by camming action and move the control member 36 axially. The member 36 acts through a spring disc 40 to move the driving member 2 out of engagement with the gear 20 against the spring 14, and thus hold the clutch disengaged as long as the member 36 is held stationary. The axial depth of the teeth 34, 32 is greater than the depth of teeth 18, 28 to ensure complete disengagement. Means to prevent reverse rotation of the driven members may be provided to prevent unintentional re-engagement.
