Abstract

1466380 Positive clutches; slip couplings T R DANBY 3 Oct 1974 [5 Oct 1973] 46573/73 Heading F2C A positive or overload release clutch comprises torque transmitting balls 5 carried in radial bores in a driven shaft 2 and pressed into engagement with spherical seatings in the inner periphery of a driving sleeve 1 by an axially loaded ball 6 or tapered pin. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the balls are held in engagement with the seatings by a tapered pin which is loaded axially by a lever (9). In an overload release clutch Fig. 4 (not shown) the balls are normally held in engagement with their seatings by a ball which is loaded axially by a spring pressed pin (14). The spring bias may be adjustable to adjust the torque at which the clutch slips. The clutch may be held disengaged on overload by a pawl (13) and, on disengagement, the pin (14) may actuate a switch (15). In Fig. 5 (not shown) a lever provides manual disengagement of an overload release clutch. The axial loading may alternatively be provided by a solenoid or fluid pressure and/or the clutch may be disengaged by a solenoid or fluid pressure.
