Abstract

1492543 Slip Clutches GKN SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd 6 May 1975 [18 May 1974] 22307/74 Heading F2C [Also in Division B3] In a torque limiting clutch for a power operated tool (e.g. a screwdriver, nut runner or drill) wherein the clutch normally slips when a predetermined torque is exceeded, manual override means 20 or 35 are provided to increase the torque at which the clutch slips. In Fig. 1 the torque transmitted by a multiplate slip clutch 16 between a driving shaft 13 and a workpieoe holder 14 is increased by a lever 20 which acts through a thrust bearing 23 on a reaction plate 18 to increase the loading of a clutch engaging spring 17. The torque at which the clutch normally slips is determined by an adjustable nut 19 against which the reaction plate 18 bears. In Fig. 2 (not shown) an axially slidable part of the tool casing (27) acts through a toggle linkage (28) to move the clutch disc pack axially against the bias of the loading spring (17) and thus increases the load on the disc pack and the torque transmitted thereby. In Fig. 3 a slip clutch 32 is in parallel with a friction clutch 33 which is manually engaged to increase the transmitted torque. The clutch 33 is engaged by axial movement of a part 35 of the tool casing which acts through an inclined surface 37 and balls 38 on the clutch presser plate 39. In Fig. 4 (not shown) a reaction plate (43) of a slip clutch (41) acts additionally as a presser plate for a parallel friction clutch (42). The plate (43) is normally held in a position in which the friction clutch is disengaged but on axial movement of a part (44) of the tool casing, a ball toggle (47) releases the plate 43 which engages the friction clutch. A single spring (17) providing the engaging pressure for both clutches.
