Abstract
912,633. Ratchet clutches; variable-speed gear. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. May 13, 1959 [June 6, 1958], No. 16495/59. Class 80 (2). For direct drive in a cycle three-speed gear, a sprocket 11 drives a hub 5 through a ratchet clutch comprising a driving member 2 and pawls 3 urged by springs 3a into engagement with the internal teeth of a driven member 4 fast with the hub. In changing to low gear a dog clutch member 10 is slid to the right and engages lugs 7 of a sleeve 6. The sleeve 6 is thereby slid to the right, and has a conical extension 9 which engages extensions of the pawls 3, forcing them radially inwards to disengage the clutch. When changing back to direct drive a spring 14 returns the sleeve 6 to a position releasing the pawls. The gearing is epicyclic with a stationary sun gear 17; for low gear external splines on the member 10 engage internal splines on the member 2 which is integral with a ring gear 1, and the ratchet clutch is disengaged, drive being through the ring gear, a planet carrier 16 and a left-hand ratchet clutch 20; for direct drive member 10 is moved leftwards until the ratchet clutch pawls 3 are released, the splines still engaging the member 2, and for high gear the member 10 is moved to its extreme position in which facial teeth engage corresponding teeth 15 on the planet carrier, drive occurring through the planet carrier, ring gear and the right-hand ratchet clutch.
