684,892. Clutches, claw and free-wheel. CHRYSLER CORPORATION. Feb. 3, 1948 [Jan. 16, 1941], No. 3677/51. Divided out of 684,833. Drawings to Specification. Class 80 (ii). The subject-matter is the same as that of Specification 684,833 but the claims are directed towards the synchronising balk-teeth which, during movement of the dog-clutch sleeve Q, see Figs. 9 and 29 in the abridgement of 684,833, forward from neutral to establish free-wheeling second speed through the overruning roller clutch F, by releasing the cage of the latter to permit its rollers to engage, positively prevent such release movement of the sleeve Q whilst the forward speed of the main input shaft 83 of the gear-train in which the roller-clutch F transmits reduced drive exceeds that of the final driven member 93 of the gear-train, so that the roller clutch is only released for engagement when the input and output shafts 83, 93 of the gear train synchronise or whilst the output is overrunning the input. The synchronising thus applies to the input and output members of the gear-train and not necessarily to the parts of the roller-clutch itself, but it ensures that the roller-clutch is only released for engagement when its driven member 104 is overrunning its driving member 118, or when both those members are stationary.
