Abstract

527,907. Reversing rearing ; brakes. WESKENSON CORPORATION. Feb. 13, 1939, No. 4663. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1938. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Reversing gearing, particularly for the propellor shafts of boats comprises a driving shaft 24, which is driven by a shaft 14 through a reduction gear 21, 22, a driven shaft 15 and a countershaft 37. The driving shaft is adapted to be clutched direct to the driven shaft 15 for forward drive by means of a sliding gear member 32, 33, the teeth 32 of which engage with similar clutch teeth 34 on a gear 26 secured to the shaft 15. For a reverse drive the gear member 32, 33 is moved to the right so that gear 33 is moved into mesh with an idler gear 35 which drives the countershaft 37 by a fixed gear 42 theron. At the same time, by means of a double operating lever 65, a sliding gear 43 on the countershaft is moved into mesh with the gear 26 on the driven shaft. During the change from forward to reverse or vice versa a roller 74 at the end of lever 65 operates on a cam 76 on a bell-crank lever 75, 55 to move a braking member 44 against the gear 26 so that the rotation of the driven shaft is stopped prior to the engagement of the gears or clutches for rotation in the reverse direction, thus facilitating the change. The brake member 44 is carried in a cylindrical drum 46 and has arms 63 carrying rollers 62 bearing on spring supported plungers 61. During reversing the momentary depression and release of the plungers 61 assists in giving a rebound torque to the driven shaft. The teeth of the gears may also be suitably shaped to assist in their meshing, such as by tapering the ends thereof and by making one of the teeth longer than the remainder. The engagement of the direct drive forward clutch may be further assisted by an auxiliary clutching device shown in Fig. 13 in which auxiliary clutching surfaces 95, 96 first come into engagement, these surfaces being formed by a few strong shallow teeth, to synchronize the speeds of the two parts and then the clutch member 132 moves against a spring resistance 103 to engage the teeth 134 on the driven gear 126.
