Abstract

383,375. Friction clutches ; reversing- gearing. SNOW & PETRELLI MFG. CO., 25, Fox Street, New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Nabstedt, A. T. ; 46, Hall Street, Whitneyville, Hamden, Connecticut, U.S.A.) Oct. 12, 1931, No. 28342. Convention date, Feb. 3. [Class 80 (ii).] An epicyclic-type reversing-gear comprises at least one self-tightening clutch having a cone ring 39 split entirely through at at least one point 56, Fig. 3. The grip cone 39 is slidable on a sleeve gear 12, Fig. 1, into engagement with a female cone 38 on a plate 16, and during engagement it contracts so as to grip the gear 12 as well as the plate 16. The reversing-gear shown, suitable for marine propulsion, comprises sun gears 29, 28 fast on driving and driven shafts 10, 11, the gear 29 being in one with the sleeve gear 12. Interengaging planet pinions 27, 26 meshing respectively with the sun gears 29, 28 are supported in a cage comprising side plates 21, 22 adapted to slide on cross-bars 23, Fig. 2, which connect endplates 16, 17 of a freely-revoluble drum 18. Between the hub of the gear 28 and a female cone 44, Fig. 1, on the plate 22 is a second split-cone grip-ring 45. To effect solid forward driving, a sleeve 54 is actuated so as to thrust to the left plungers 51 passing through the endplate 17. This thrusts both cones 45, 39 into clutch engagement, the planet cage being bodily moved in the same direction. To reverse the drive, the sleeve 54 is moved the other way, freeing the clutches, and through a lever 55 thrusting a cam bar 31, Fig. 2, through a pin 31<1>. This acts to draw together the ends of a brake 30 so as to hold the drum 18 and cage against rotation and cause the gear train to act. A modification is described in which the second split cone clutch 45, 44 of Fig. 1 is replaced by a multiple-plate clutch.
