Abstract
455,915. Hydro-mechanical variable-speed gearing. SWAN, J. G., 14, Old Square, Lincoln's Inn, London. Jan. 29, 1935, Nos. 2916 and 29172. [Class 80 (ii)] A hydro-mechanical transmission unit comprises a driven member 61 of an hydraulic coupling and an epicyclic element 58, Fig. 1, rigid with a driven shaft 63, a driving hydraulic member 60 rigid with an intermediate or remaining epicyclic element 56 and an epicyclic element 54 rigid with a driving-shaft 51 which rotates faster than the driving hydraulic member 60 and thus has a mechanical advantage with reference thereto. A casing member 53 rotating relatively to the driven shaft 63 is also in the combination. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement in which the epicyclic train comprises stepped planets 102, 103, carried by the driving element 54, and two suns 56, 58. Fig. 9 shows schematically an arrangement with a bevel planetary train. A friction planetary train may be used. Fig. 2 shows an adaptation of the arrangement of Fig. 1, for interrupting the drive when the transmission unit is used to drive a mechanical change-speed gear, not shown. When a sleeve 205 is moved left by a suitable striking lever, a plate clutch 204 between the driving casing 53 and the first epicyclic element 54 is disengaged, and a braking disc 206 is arrested so that the output shaft 63 leading to the change-speed gearing is arrested instead of being driven. Specifications 310,377, [Class 69 (ii)], 356,798, 393,294, 393,295, 393,296, 398,861, 399,155, 408,510, 420,161, 432,807, 435,389, and 446,530 are referred to.
