476,160. Variable - speed gearing. JACQUES, E. April 27, 1936, No. 11925. Convention date, Nov. 5, 1935. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 28, 1936.] [Class 80 (ii)] Apparatus for obtaining an automatic speedreduction with load comprises a differential gearing of which the sun wheel 3 and the annulus 4 are secured to the driving and driven shafts respectively, the planet carrier 8 being freely mounted on the driving shaft and a slippable clutch 9 being arranged between the driven annulus 4 and a further idle annulus 12 which is geared to the planetary cage by gearing having a reduction ratio slightly different from that between the planetary cage and the driven annulus 4, the arrangement being such that when slipping takes place the idle annulus 12 rotates in the same sense and at a slightly greater speed than the driving shaft. The clutch 9 is preferably of the magnetic type and a magnetic brake 10 co-operating with a member 25 secured to the planetary cage is also provided to enable the planetary cage to be held stationary for obtaining a reverse drive, the clutch 9 being released. A further auxiliary differential reduction-gear 16-20 may be provided, which gear may operate automatically by the slipping of a clutch 22 between the driven shaft 2 and an idle member 21, a magnetic brake 221 for holding the member 21 stationary also being provided. Instead of an automatic auxiliary reduction-gear a manually-controlled gear train may be employed. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises an arrangement in which a high reduction differential is used, a sun and an annulus being attached to the driving and driven shafts respectively, and the slippable clutch being arranged between the planetary cage and the driven annulus. In this case also when slip occurs the cage rotates in the same direction as the driving shaft at a slightly higher speed. The cage is also adapted to be held to provide a reverse drive. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
