Abstract

210,949. Farley, J. Jan. 4, 1923. VariabLe-speed gearing comprises aligned driving and driven shafts 1, 2, Figs. 2 and 4, a parallel countershaft 3, and means for allowing the toothed gearing to remain at rest during the direct clutch drive. The pinion 4 which drives the countershaft is loose on the driven shaft and has a clutch face 25. A clutch member 22 is also fast on the driven shaft. A clutch box 20 slides on the driving-shaft 1 so as to rotate therewith and has two clutch rings 24, 23. The ring 24 engages the face 25 for the countershaft drives. Alternatively, the ring 23 engages the member 22 for the direct drive. A modification employing electromagnetic friction clutches is shown in Fig. 5. A further modification for light work in which one clutch is replaced by a toothed-gea disengageable pair is shown in Fig. 7. Specification 190,0171 is referred to in the Provisional Specificaton.
