380,758. Clutches ; change - speed gearing. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AKT. - GES., (formerly ZAHNRADFABRIK AKT.-GES.), Friedrichshafen, Lake Constance, Germany. May 2,1932, No. 12526. Convention date, May 2, 1931. [Class 80 (ii).] In change-speed gearing, the claw clutches employed are synchronized by plate clutches, the latter being inside hollow gears &c. 3, 4. The gears 3, 4 are supported in a casing 5 independently of a power shaft 1. Clutch plates 6, 7 are splined alternately to the gear 3 &c. and to the shaft 1. A clutch sleeve 2 slidably splined on the shaft 1 has rings of clutch teeth 2<1>. Through the sleeve 2 pass bolts 10 sliding in keyways in the shaft 1. The sleeve 2 is normally coupled to the bolts 10 for axial motion by spring-pressed balls 11, one to each bolt. To entrain the gear 3, the sleeve 2 is thrust to the left, whereby the bolts 10 through a presser ring 9 press the clutch plates together and bring clutch teeth 3<1> in the gear to about the same speed as the clutch teeth 2<1>. Continued thrust on the sleeve 2 causes the.balls 11 to slip clear of the bolts 10, so releasing the plate clutch, while at the same time the clutch ring 2<1> slips into mesh with the ring 3<1>, establishing positive connection.
