Abstract
194,525. Aylward, L. J. Feb. 25, 1922. Variable-speed gearing comprises clutches each having a ring of balls or rollers l, Fig. 3, which are thrust radially inwards into positive engagement by sliding wedge sleeves o. The balls &c. l are supported in a cage m, Fig. 4, upon a loose gear &c. d and when thrust inwards engage keyways n in a shaft b. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, a direct drive from a driving-shaft a is produced when the clutch on the extreme right is actuated. Two countershaft reduced speeds and reversed driving respectively are brought into action by clutching wheels e, el, f to the shaft b. Striking forks p, p<1> are secured to selector bars u, u<1>, Fig. 5, which are normally held locked by a bar r between the ends of transverse bolts s. In the act of releasing a main clutch, the bar r is slid to the right so that the bolts s release the bars u, u' for changing speed.
