Abstract

298,327. McGill, H. Aug. 17, 1927. variable-speed gearing is controlled automatically by the movement of a piston 27, Fig. 2, effected by a pump 30 driven from the driven shaft 9. A lay shaft 6 is constantly driven from driving-shaft 4 and carries gear 12, 14. Direct drive and two reduced speeds are effected by the selective clutching to shaft 9 of rings 17, 13, 15. Each clutch has radial spring-returned plungers 20, Fig. 6, which engage recesses 21, Fig. 2, in the rings. The operation is effected by the axial sliding of cam bars 23 which are coupled to the piston 27, which in this form, surrounds shaft 9. A spring 34 constantly thrusts the piston towards the lowest-gear position, and disconnection of drive is effected by sliding the gear 14 out of mesh. The pump 30 thrusts preferably oil through a pipe into annular chamber behind piston 27 so a.s to displace the piston. There are escape ports 38, 39 the effect of which is that the gear-controlling displacements of piston 27 are the proper function of the speed of the driven shaft 9. A bye-pass may be provided to enable, say, a vehicle to descend hills in low gear.
