Abstract

189,110. Wingquist, S. G. Nov. 16, 1921, [Convention date]. Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.-Relates to hydraulic couplings and variable-speed gears comprising one or more pumps of the piston or sliding-vane type, and consists in means for automatic control so that the most suitable transmission ratio is obtained at any moment. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the driving- shaft 1 carries a rotor 2 co-operating with a rotor 5 on the driven shaft 3 and with rotor bodies 6, 7 carried by sleeves 10. 11 provided with pawls 12, 13 co-operating with ratchet teeth in a frame 15, so that the bodies 6. 7 are prevented from rotating oppositely to the rotor 2. A partition 16 secured to the rotor 2 supports the casings of valves 20, 21, 22, the pairs of valves being linked to rings 35, 36, 37 mounted on a sleeve 38 projecting from the partition, and the outer ends of the valves 20, 21. being always subject to the pressure generated in the pump 2, 5. Safety valves 44 are also provided. With the driving-shaft at rest, springs 42 press the valves 22 into position to establish communication between the pressure and suction chambers of the pump 2, 5. When the driving-shaft rotates at or above a first predetermined speed, the valves 22 are moved outwards centrifugally to close this communication, a pressure, will be established in the pump 2, 5 and the shaft 3 will be driven at the same speed as the shaft 1 if the load on the shaft 3 be a light one. When the load increases, so that the liquid pressure on the valve 20 exceeds the centrifugal force acting on the valve, the valve is moved inwards, so as to open communication between the pump 2, 5 and the pump 2, 6 and a transmission ratio is established. A second ratio is established when the valve 21 is similarly operated. When the driving-shaft exceeds a. second and greater predetermined speed, the valves 20, 21 are moved outwards by centrifugal force and a direct drive is established. In modifications, the rotors 2, 5 are carried by the driven and driving shafts respectively, so that the centrifugal force acting on the valves is that due to the speed of the driven shaft; or two sets of valves may be employed, one controlled by the driving and the other by the driven shaft.
