Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.-In hydraulic variable-speed gears having pumps and motors of the meshing gear type, the torque and speed of the driven shaft are automatically varied in stages according to the resistance offered to the driven shaft. The pump 4, Figs. 1 and 3, draws liquid from a reservoir 13 and normally delivers it through a conduit 16 to a motor 5. Should the pressure in the conduit increase, a valve 22, Fig. 4, is opened against spring pressure and the liquid obtains access to another motor 6. Other motors 7, 8 adapted to come into action successively may be provided, together with a reversing motor 9 supplied through a conduit 16<x>. A valve 17 determines whether the pumped liquid is supplied to the conduit 16 or 16<x>, and a valve 19 is provided which may be opened to varying extents to bye-pass part or all of the pumped liquid.
