Abstract

227,266. Lendl, O. Dec. 13, 1923. Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.- Hydraulic variable-speed gearing comprises driving and driven gear-wheel pumps, the capacity of which is varied by relative longitudinal adjustment of the pump members. The driving shaft 2, Fig. 1, is connected to internally-toothed rims 5, 6 co-operating with gear-wheels 7, 8 mounted on a shaft 10 axially adjustable in a rotor 13 connected to the driven shaft 31. Between the rims 5, 6 is an extension 15 of the rotor, and between the wheels 7, 8 is a spacing member 9. The pair of pumps 5, 7 and 6, 8 are connected in such a manner that the suction of each pump is connected to the delivery of the other, and the pump 6, 8 is twice the width of the pump 5, 7. In the position shown, the capacities are equal so that the pair supply no liquid to a conduit 49<1>, Fig. 10. As the shaft 10 is adjusted in the direction of the arrow 14, the capacity of the pump 5, 7 diminishes and that of the pump 6, 8 increases so that an increasing quantity is supplied to the conduit 49<1> and withdrawn from a conduit 48<1>. The driven pump consists of a pair of gear-wheel pumps 16, 18 and 17, 19 similar to the other pumps, except that the toothed rims 16, 17 are fixed. In the position shown, the capacity of the driven pair of pumps is a maximum, which gradually decreases by adjustment of the shaft 10 as the capacity of the driving pair increases, the shaft 31 being thereby driven at an increasing speed. The conduits 48<1>, 49<1> are provided with slides adjustable by a rod 59 and having members 52<1>, 53<1> which are operated to interrupt and reverse the drive, other members 70<1>, 71<1> serving to brake the shaft 31 when required. Automatic leakage-replenishing valves 65 are provided.
