Abstract

427,956. Hydraulic transmission of power. THOMA, H., 9, Bachstrasse, Karlsruhe, Germany. Aug. 2, 1933, No. 21755. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1932. [Class 69 (ii)] Hydraulic transmission mechanism comprises sets d, f, Fig. 1, of gear wheel or other pumps, the casing of each set being carried by the driving shaft a, the other member d<1> of one set being mounted on a shaft i which can be coupled to the final driven shaft g, and the other member f<1> of the other set being connected to the shaft i through epicyclic gearing. The gearing may com - prise a bevel wheel k meshing with pinions l, which are carried from the shaft i and mesh with a bevel wheel m, which may be prevented from rotation in one direction, e.g. by a pawl n. The pump inlets and outlets are connected as shown in Fig. 2 to the casing of a valve or valves o moved outwards by centrifugal force as the speed of the driving shaft increases, the outward movement moving a member r to the right against spring action. Manually operated means are also provided for moving the member r and valves when desired. When the valve o is in the position shown in Fig. 2, no drive is transmitted, as there is free circulation of liquid. When the passage v is shut off from tho passage y by the first outward movement of the valve, the shaft Is driven at a less speed than the shaft a. A further outward movement gives an increased speed, and the final outward movement shuts off the passage v from the passage t as shown in Fig. 6, and a direct drive transmission is effected, the pawl n being disengaged at this time. In order to prevent overheating, an auxiliary pump normally delivers oil through a pipe x, and oil returns to a reservoir 12 through pipes wand 21. If the flow and pressure in 21 becomes excessive, pressure entering at 17 moves a valve 23 to stop the supply and return.
