566,839. Hydraulic transmission of power. HYDRAULIC CONTROL ENGINEERING CO. Aug. 18, 1943, No. 13460. Convention date, Dec. 14, 1942. [Class 69 (ii)] A coupling comprises a housing 10 on the driven shaft carrying a ring gear 36 engaging pinions 54, 56 on a rotor carried by the driving shaft and adapted to pump liquid from a reservoir 62 in the rotor through a pressure responsive check valve 78 back to the reservoir. At low driving speeds the liquid passes through ports 88 in the valve and no drive is transmitted, but as the speed increases the pumps deliver more liquid to a common chamber 68 and the valve is forced back, against spring. pressure, until the port 88 is cut off. The pinions then become locked by back pressure and a solid drive is transmitted. Should overrunning occur, the pumps merely circulate liquid in the reverse direction. In a modification, the pumps deliver to the reservoir through separate valves 760, each loaded by light and heavy springs 862, 860, the latter of which becomes effective only after the valve has lifted from its seating in the rotor. In this case, if overrunning occurs, the valves close and pressure builds up in the reservoir and produces a braking effect.
