Abstract

1,065,214. Hydraulic clutches. KLEIN, SCHANZLIN & BECKER A.G. April 17, 1964, No. 16061/64. Heading F2C. An hydraulic clutch in the form of a three-element epicyclic gear, of which the planets 3 operate as gear-wheel pumps controlled by valves A, has associated pistons B, C controlling forward and reverse spring coupling discs 10, 9, respectively. The spring-loaded piston valves A are connected between suction and delivery chambers S, D formed between the planets 3 and the sunwheel 2 and annulus 4, valves A and pistons B being mounted in a carrier 6 between the side cage elements of the planet carrier 5, while pistons C are mounted in the outer gear casing. Annulus 4 is coupled to the rotor 14 of a hydrodynamic turbo-brake 15 and the clutch is coupled to a hydrodynamic torque converter (not shown) supplying the operating liquid. As shown, with valves A closed, coupling disc 9 is inoperative, while disc 10 couples the planet carrier 5 to a plate 18 connected to the output shaft 8 to lock the gear for direct forward drive. With increasing pressure pistons B are first operated to release disc 10, pistons C are then operated to engage disc 9 with a plate 13 on the planet carrier 5 and thus couple the latter with the gear casing, and finally valves A are opened to allow pinions 3 to function and transmit reverse drive. A restriction (E), Fig. 3 (not shown), ensures correct operating sequence and a three-way valve (F) enables pistons C to be cut out to set the gear in neutral.
