Abstract

692,056. Variable-speed gearing. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Jan. 15, 1951 [Jan. 13, 1950], No. 1133/51. Class 80 (ii). In gearing wherein the input is split by an epicyclic gear C into two branches which are re-combined at the output by a second epicyclic gear D, the two branches are concentric and are interconnected through a hydraulic torque converter. The stepped planets of the two gears C, D are carried by the driving and driven shafts A, B respectively, the larger pinions 3 of gear C meshing with an annulus 4 connected to the sun 8 of gear D, meshing with the larger pinions 9 of gear D, through a central shaft 5, while the smaller pinions 2 of gear C mesh with a sun 6 fast on a hollow shaft 7 to which the annulus 12 of gear D is secured through a disc 14. Swashplates 19, 25 of adjustable inclination mounted on shaft 7 actuate the pistons 18, 24 of a hydraulic pump E and motor F forming a hydrostatic converter, the pump cylinders 17 being formed in a drum 15 fast on shaft 5 while the motor cylinders 23 are formed in the stationary housing G. Communication between the pump and motor cylinders is controlled by ports in the disc 14. If plate 19 is normal to shaft 7, with 25 inclined, the branch comprising the shaft 7 is held stationarv and a fixed reduced drive is transmitted through the branch comprising shaft 5. Shaft 7 may additionally be held by a brake 33. If plate 19 is inclined in one direction, a composite drive varying from reduced to overdrive is transmitted, depending on the inclination of plate 25 to one side or the other, shaft 5 being held stationary in the maximum overdrive position, in which it may additionally be held by a brake. If plate 19 is adjusted into the oppositely-inclined position, reverse drive is obtained.
