Abstract

601,303. Hydromechanical variable-speed gear combinations. SALERNI, P. M. July 23, 1942, No. 10334. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] A hydraulic torque converter is driven from the input shaft through a reduction gear which can be brought into operation depending upon conditions in the converter itself. The impeller 7 is connected to the planet carrier 6 of an epicyclic gear, the annulus 3 of which is driven by the shaft 1 and casing 2. The sunwheel 4 is prevented from rotating backwards when required by the free-wheel device 21 engaging the sleeve 22, this sleeve being held stationary by the band brake 23. The reaction member 9 can be freed similarly. On starting, the pressure of the fluid in the converter passing through passages 26, 27, 28 ... 36 acting on the piston 15 disengages the clutch 12 and allows the epicyclic gear to function. When running conditions allow the fluid pressure to fall, clutch 12 engages, and direct drive of the impeller occurs. The controls of the gear-box, brake band 23 and valve 32 may be mechanically interlinked.
