Abstract

879,456. Variable-speed gearing. SAMPIETRO, A. C. Sept. 27, 1957 [Oct. 12, 1956], No. 10768/61. Divided out of 879,452. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] A clutchless vehicle transmission comprises a unitary assembly of an over-drive epicyclic train 14, an hydraulic torque converter 5 and an epicyclic reversing train 16 driving directly the crown-wheel and pinion 44<SP>11</SP>, 441 of the rear wheel differential. The sun 20 of the train 14 is held through a gear member 23 to provide an over-drive from the annulus 21 through a coupling sleeve 30 to the casing 15 and impeller 28 of the torque converter 5. If the sun 20 is released the shaft 10 drives the casing 15 through a one-way friction clutch 26. The sleeve 30 may also be moved to lock the shaft 10 directly to the casing 15 so that engine braking is available. The torque converter is of the three element type, the reaction member 36 being held from reverse rotation by a one-way brake 38 but adapted to speed up to the runner 35. The reversing train 16 drives forwards on clutching the driven annulus 43 to the carrier 40 by cones 48, 49 acted upon by fluid pressure whilst reverse is obtained by holding the carrier by a brake 46. Oil-pressure for operation of the clutch 48, 49 and brake 46 is provided by a pump 39 on the runner shaft 34 of the converter.
