Abstract

1,121,591. Reverse gearing; friction clutches. SELF-CHANGING GEARS Ltd. 23 Feb., 1967 [5 Jan., 1966], No. 547/66. Headings F2C and F2D. A reverse gear for a water craft comprises an input shaft 1, driven by an engine 3 through a universal joint 2, and carrying a common drive member 14 selectively clutchable to a vertical propeller shaft 9 by an hydraulically actuated friction clutch 12 on a sleeve 4 carrying a forward bevel 6, and a similar clutch 13 on a sleeve 5 carrying a reverse bevel 7. The clutches 12 and 13 are engaged by pistons 22, 23 and spring disengaged. Either of valves 28, 29 in the common drive member 14 may be forced radially inwards to allow application of the respective clutch by hydraulic pressure from feed ports 26, 27 of a selector control (not further described), via radial bores 35, 36 and inlet ports (37), (38), Figs. 3, 5 (not shown), the other valve being forced radially outwards by centrifugal force when member 14 rotates to prevent engagement of the other clutch, or to disengage a previously applied clutch on removing apply pressure from bore 35 or 36. An engine driven pump 25 supplies clutch apply pressure and lubrication, the selector control also including a lubrication inlet 51. To provide against failure of the hydraulic system, the forward clutch 12 is provided with emergency locking screws 52 to manually apply the clutch.
