Abstract

945,877. Motor vehicles. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd. Aug. 8, 1960 [Aug. 14, 1959; Sept. 21, 1959], Nos. 27874/59 and 32074/59. Heading B7H. [Also in Divisions E1 and F2] An hydrostatic power transmission for transmitting power from a source 1, such as the engine of an earth-scraping vehicle, to a load, such as the earth engaging wheels 2, 5, comprises a pair of positive-displacement motors 2A, 5A connected in parallel with a positive-displacement pump 6, a mechanical connection between each motor and the load, one of the mechanical connections including a disconnectable clutch, and a valve 9 controlling the hydraulic connection to the motor having the clutch, and pressure responsive means 23, 29 to cause the clutch to engage when the pressure to the motor having the clutch is high and to disengage when the pressure is low. In the embodiment described, the engine 1 drives a pair of reversible, variable-displacement pumps 6, 7, pump 6 driving motors 2A, 5A connected to wheels 2, 5, and pump 7 driving motors 3A, 4A connected to wheels 3, 4. One motor 4A, 5A of each pair has a disconnectable clutch and valves 9, 11 are provided in the hydraulic connections leading to those motors. When the scraper of the vehicle is in use, the valves 9, 11 are open and the clutches engaged so that all four motors drive the vehicle at low speed. When the bucket of the vehicle is full, the clutches are disengaged and the valves closed to drive the vehicle at high speed. A flow-divider such as described in Specification 886,022 may be interposed in the connections from each pump to its motors so that, when both motors of a circuit are in operation, the flow is divided proportionally between the motors to prevent one wheel or the other slipping. The circuits may be interconnected by restrictors or one-way valves 16, 17 so that fluid from one circuit may flow to the other in the event of different pressures occurring in the circuit. The clutches are of the unidirectional type and two clutches operative in opposite directions, so that the vehicle can be reversed, are provided for each motor 4A, 5A housed in a unit 18 connected by reduction gearing 19 to the wheel. The clutches may be operated by piston-and-cylinder devices 23, 24 and 28, 29 operated by the pressure in the connections 26, 27 leading to the motor. In an alternative arrangement, a single piston having the opposite ends of its cylinder joined to the connections 26, 27 operates the clutches. In another embodiment, the pairs of motors drive a single wheel. The vehicle is steered by a mechanism which controls the differential setting of the pumps 6, 7 and the pivoting of a framework carrying the front wheels.
