Abstract

311,958. Whittle, O. L. June 12, 1928. Variable-speed friction gearing comprises discs 6 tapered on one side and engaged by wheels 11 having rings of material 13 projecting laterally near their peripheries. One set of elements, such as 6, are secured to their shaft 4 at fixed distances apart. The other set, such as 11, are adapted to slide on or with their shaft 10, so as to be brought simultaneously into and out of engagement with the elements of the other set. In the arrangement shown, a spring 14 thrusts shaft 10 with wheels 11 against discs 6. A hand lever may be provided to pull shaft 10 to the right to disengage the drive. Speed variations are effected by moving shaft 10 towards and from shaft 4. A double variable arrangement is described in which a laterally movable shaft, such as 10, carries a set of driven wheels 11 and also a set of coned discs driving back to a set of wheels on a shaft in line with the first shaft, such as 4.
