Abstract

Variable-speed friction gearing comprises inclined driving and driven shafts a, b, a disc wheel a<1> with bevel gear surfaces c, d, e splined on the shaft a, cone shaped wheels c<1>, d<1>, e<1> splined on the shaft b, and a slotted spring-pressed pivoted bar g for producing frictional engagement in the pair of gears which are engaged for each speed. In each of the slots i, i<1> in the bar g is a slider j, j<1> jointed to one of the levers l, l<1> which advance the groups of gears into frictional engagement. Thus the thrust of a spring s is distributed upon both elements of an engaged pair. In changing speed, a pedal r is depressed, which turns the lever g to inoperative position, compressing the spring s and withdrawing both groups of gears. A lever q<2> is then operated to shift the sliders j, i<1> and bring the gear groups to new relative positions. The new speed engages on release of the pedal.
