Abstract

Variable-speed gearing of the kind comprising a pair of meshing gear and clutch members l, n, Fig. 1, slidable upon a main shaft a and a countershaft k respectively is operated by a lever q, Fig. 3, having a notched quadrant u engaged by a pivoted spring pawl v. The member l is splined on the driving-shaft a and is coupled by a flange o and groove p to the member n, which is loose on the shaft k. A bowl s on the lever q engages a groove t in the member l. A gear f, loose on the shaft a, meshes with a gear i connected by shaft or sleeved k to a gear h meshing with a gear b fast on the driven sleeve d of the gearing. In the position shown, the drive passes through the gears l, n, through clutch members 4, 5, to the shaft k, and gears h, b, yielding middle speed. Movement to the left effects a direct high-speed drive through clutch members z, c. Movement to the right effects the low speed, when the drive passes through clutch members m, g, gears f, i, the shaft k, and gears h, b.
