Abstract

249,747. Fornaca, G. Sept. 10, 1925. Variable-speed gearing suitable for railroad motor cars has epicyclic trains for its lower speeds brought in by brakes, and ordinary toothed pairs for its higher speeds brought in by friction clutches, the whole being pneumatically controlled. A gear 7 fast on the driven shaft 20 meshes with a gear 6 loose on the driving-shaft 10. The gear 6 is connected to the shaft 10 by two separate epicyclic trains 5, 3, 2, 1 and 5<1>, 3<1>, 2<1>, 1<1>. Thus two lowest speeds are effected by applying brakes to drums 4, 4<1> respectively. Gears 14, 14<1> fast on the shaft 20 mesh with gears 15, 15<1> loose on the shaft 10 and adapted to be connected thereto by cone clutches 13, 13<1>. The gears 15, 15<1> are slidable as a unit by a lever 17, Fig. 3, thrust to one side and the other by pneumatic pistons 19 19'. The brakes are preferably shoes 9, Fig. 2, contracted in pairs by two doubleended cylinders such as 12. Suitable selector means is employed.
