356,094. Change-speed gearing. ROYCE, SIR F. H., Nightingale Road, Derby. July 12, 1930, No. 10913/31. Divided on 355,895. [Class 80 (ii).] Change - speed gearing comprises a plurality of epicycle trains with annulus wheels or drums g . . g<3> at least one of which g<1> is not held by a brake to effect a possible speed. The sun gears e . . e<3> are all fast on driving- shaft b and each of the drums g<1> . . g<3> carries the planets of the train next to the left. The planet carrier h<3> of the last train on the right is secured to driven shaft c. Drum g on the last train on the left is fast to a sleeve adapted to be engaged by a dog clutch k<7> to effect solid drive at top or fourth speed. The always-free drum g<1> serves to produce a suitable ratio for third speed when drum g is held by a brake k. Second speed is obtained by holding drum g<2>, by brake k<2>, and first or lowest speed by holding drum g3 by brake k<3>. The action of brake k<3> may be followed automatically by locking means engaging dogs k<4> on drum g<3> as described in Specification 351,121. The action of brakes k, k<2> may be supplemented by balanced locking levers as described in Specification 350,114. Shaft c may be connected to an ultimately driven shaft by an epicyclic reversing-gear described in Specification 355,895.
