Abstract

456,007. Epicyclic variable-speed gearing. NORMANVILLE, E. J. DE, Haydon House, Kingsbury, Middlesex, and DE NORMANVILLE TRANSMISSIONS, Ltd., Humber Road, Coventry. June 1, 1935, No. 15990. [Class 80 (ii)] Comprises a one-way clutch connection i between driving and driven shafts a, b and an alternative connection through a planetary overdriving train d, e, g between the same two shafts as described in Specification 423,267. A clutch k is adapted to produce a solid rotation of the planetary train and thereby to interconnect the driving and driven shafts a, b. In the arrangement shown, the planetcarrier c is fast on the shaft a and the one-way clutch i is between the carrier c and the annulus g which is fast on the shaft b. The clutch k is an internal cone normally thrust by a spring n to engage the annulus g to effect the solid drive which is alternative to the one-way clutch drive. This alternative connection will transmit a reversed drive. An arrangement is described with two parallel fluid-pressure cylinders for moving the clutch k against the spring n into engagement with a fixed braking surface l to hold the sun gear e stationary to overdrive the shaft b. This two-speed unit may be arranged upon a vehicle either before or behind a gear-box containing either overtaking or synchronized claw clutches. The clutch k may engage the carrier instead of the annulus.
