684,814. Change-speed gearing. STOECKICHT, W. G. Feb. 27, 1951 [Aug. 30, 1950] , No. 4726/51. Class 80 (ii). A change-speed gear giving two forward and one reverse speeds comprises two epicyclic gear sets, the annulus 6 of the first set being coupled to the engine shaft 4, the carrier 13 of the second set constituting the driven member of the double gear, the carrier 8 of the first set being coupled to the annulus 11. of the second set and the two suns 9, 14 being formed on a common sleeve 15. Reduced forward speed is obtained by applying a brake 24 to the member 15, direct drive by engaging a fluid-actuated clutch 26 between the annulus 6 and the carrier 13, and reduced reverse drive by applying a brake 23 to the carrier 8. As shown, the carrier 13 drives the final driven shaft 20 through an additional epicyclic. gear of which the annulus 18 is coupled to the carrier 13, carrier 19 is integral with shaft 20, a brake 25 being adapted to be applied to sun 22 or a fluid-actuated clutch 27 engaged between sun 22 and carrier 19 so as to afford two additional reduced forward speeds. Alternatively, the additional gear set 18, 19, 22 may be arranged ahead of the double gear set and may be replaced by a hydraulic torque converter.
