Epicyclic gearing providing three speeds and reverse comprises a carrier c fast on the output shaft d and carrying inter-engaging planets f, g, engaging respectively with a sun wheel b fast on the input shaft a and with a reaction sun wheel h loose on shaft a, an annulus p engaging the planets g and controlled by a brake q, a second carrier j fast with wheel h and controlled by a brake k, planets m on carrier j engaging with an annulus o fast on carrier c and with a second reaction sun wheel n loose on shaft a, and a. clutch member s fast with wheel n and cooperating with a brake t and with a clutch member u rotating with shaft a. First speed is obtained by applying brake k, second by applying brake t, direct drive by engaging clutch u, s, and reverse by applying brake q. A one-way clutch x may be interposed between wheel n (or h) and a member v, so that a free-wheeling second (or first) speed may be obtained by applying a brake w to the member v. An additional low speed may be obtained by applying a brake to a further annulus engaging the planets f.
