Abstract

674,525. Variable-speed gearing. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Jan. 26, 1950 [Jan. 26, 1949], No. 2070/50. Class 80 (ii). Epicyclic gearing for motor vehicles giving three forward speeds and reverse comprises loose sun gears 31, 36, a gear annulus 30 formed on the driven shaft 11, a loose carrier 40, 41, planet pinions 32 meshing with the annulus 30, sun gear 36 and planet pinions 33 which latter mesh with the sun 31, brakes 15, 16 for the sun, 36 and carrier, a cone clutch 17 between sun 31 and a sleeve 24 connected to the engine shaft 10 through a hydraulic torque converter 13, and a multi-plate clutch 18 between sun 36 and sleeve 24. Clutch 17 is engaged for all forward speeds, low being obtained by applying brake 16, intermediate by applying brake 15, and direct drive by engaging clutch 18. Reverse is obtained by engaging clutch 18 and applying brake 16. The suns 31, 36 have nested sleeves 35, 37 journalled on a shaft 12 rotating with shaft 10. The brakes 15, 16 are applied by fluid-pressure motors 52, 49 and the clutches 18, 17, which are spring-disengaged, are engaged by pistons 65, 57 behind which pressure fluid is supplied through passages 68, 69 from a bore 70 in the shaft 12 and a tube 71 secured within the bore. The fluid pump is driven from a gear 85 loose on the shaft 11, the gear 85 being driven by both shafts 11, 12 by means of planet gears 81, 82 carried by the shaft 11 and meshing with the gear 85 and with a gear 84 fixed on the shaft 12.
