Abstract
697,394. Change speed gearing. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. June 2, 1950, No. 13835/50. Class 80 (ii). A hydraulic torque converter 13, the reaction member 21 of which is prevented from backward rotation by a one-way detent 31, is arranged in series between the engine shaft 10 of a motor vehicle and an epicyclic change-speed gear 15 giving three forward speeds and reverse and comprising an annulus 52 secured to the driven shaft 11, two suns 53, 56 adapted to be connected alternatively to the converter turbine shaft 12 by a double friction-synchronised positive clutch 14 for forward and reverse drive respectively, and planets 54 meshing with the annulus 52, with the sun 56 and with other planets 55 which mesh with the sun 53. The planet carrier 57 is arrested by a brake 16 for reverse or low forward speeds, the sun 56 is arrested by a brake 17 for intermediate forward speed, and the carrier 57 and sun 56 are connected by a friction clutch 18 for direct drive. The clutch 18 is engaged by a pressure-fluidoperated piston 66 and the brakes 16, 17 by pressure-fluid servomotors 70, 69, the pressurefluid being supplied, under the control of valves (not shown), by a pump 71 driven by both shafts 10, 11 from a gear 74 loose on the shaft 11 and meshing with a double planet gear 75, 76 carried by the annulus 52 and meshing with a gear 78 secured on an extension 10a of the shaft 10. A governor 79 is also driven from the gear 74. The pump, governor, valves and servomotors are arranged beneath the gearing, easy access thereto being afforded on removal of an oil pan 86.
