Abstract
888,130. Change-speed gear; clutches. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 18, 1960 [July 17, 1959], No. 24980/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] In a variable-speed transmission of the type comprising a number of planetary gear units arranged in series and in which the gear ratios are established by the operation of brakes and multi-disc clutches, provision is made for lubricating any clutch in which relative rotation of the two sets of discs may occur during operation. General arrangement.-The transmission shown is for a tractor drive giving ten forward and two reverse gear ratios, and is also arranged to enable a power take-off shaft 22 to be connected to the input shaft 10 or output shaft 12. The main transmission comprises four planetary gear units 14, 16, 18, 20, three band-brakes 86, 106, 136 and three fluid-pressure-operated clutches 96, 126, 146. Gear units 16, 18 are effective to provide five forward and one reverse gear ratios, while unit 14 provides an overdrive which may be combined with each of the ratios obtainable with units 16, 18, and unit 20 is a are actuated by a cam 190 on the gear 156 to reduction gear for all the ratios provided by units 14, 16, 18. A " park " condition, with input shaft 10 rotating, may be obtained by engaging the second and third brakes 106, 136. A pump 48 driven by input shaft 10 furnishes pressure liquid for operating the control system and for lubrication. Clutch lubrication.-In first gear with the third brake 136 and third clutch 146 engaged, and in third gear when the first brake 86 is also engaged, relative rotation of the discs of the second clutch 126 occurs and to reduce friction under such conditions the clutch is lubricated by liquid from pump 48 which passes along an axial bore in the main shaft 10 and through a radial passage 242 to the clutch drum 240, from which it escapes between the discs through axial slots 270, Fig. 3. Power take-off.-Input shaft 10 may be connected to take-off shaft 22 by drive pinions 62, 64 meshing with a compound pinion 184, 186, selection of the appropriate drive-pinion being effected by an axially-movable toothed clutch 60, and the drive being established by the engagement of a fluid-pressure-operated disc clutch 26 housed within compound pinion member 182. Bevel gearing 190, 202 is arranged between member 182 and shaft 22 and this may be used to drive one or more auxiliary transverse shafts. Output shaft 12 is connected to shaft 22 by pinions 172, 174, the latter of which is normally free on shaft 22, but may be coupled therewith by an axially-movable toothed clutch 226.
