492,847. Epicyclic variable speed gearing. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAPEN AKT.-GES. Nov. 15, 1937, No. 31402. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] In epicyclic variable-speed gearing giving a solid drive, an overdrive, and a reverse, the sun-wheel 8 and the carrier 3, 6 for the planets 5 can alternatively be clutched to the driving- shaft 1 by clutch teeth 12, 11, on the sliding collar 9, engaging corresponding teeth 14, 13 on the sun and carrier. The annulus 7 is secured to the driven shaft 2. An overdrive is obtained when the carrier is clutched to the shaft 1 and the sun is stationed by an electromagnetic brake 21, and a reverse drive results when the sun is clutched to the shaft 1 and the carrier is stationed by engagement of teeth 23 on a rod 22 sliding in the casing with teeth 24 on the carrier. The necessary change-over is effected by a linkage 29, 28, 27. An electromagnetic clutch 16 secures the carrier to the sun to give a solid drive when the carrier is clutched to the driving-shaft. In a modification, all clutches and brakes are electromagnetic, the clutch 16 is dispensed with, and solid drive is obtained by simultaneous clutching of the sun and carrier to the driving-shaft. The gear may be combined in series with a further multispeed gear, the gear sizes being so chosen as not to produce duplication of ratios.
