Abstract
229,953. Winch, H. J. Sept. 16, 1924. Variable-speed gearing. - A two-speed gear with intermediate speeds produced by allowing a brake to slip, suitable for hauling-machinery, comprise an epicyclic train combined with a non-epicyclic train and a one-way clutch. Stepped planet gears 13, 14 carried in a loose drum 8 mesh with sun gears 15, 16 secured to the driving-shaft 3 and driven shaft 4, respectively. Upon a sleeve 31 extending from the drum 8 is secured a gear 17 connected through idlers 18 with an internally-toothed wheel 22. The idlers turn on fixed axes and the wheel 22 is connected to the shaft 4 by a one-way clutch 26. When a brake 10 is applied to the drum 8, the drive passes through the train 15, 13, 14, 16 yielding the high speed. When the brake is released, the planet-carrier 8 runs backwards, but not freely, as it has to drive the shaft 4 through the train 17, 18, 22, 26, while part of the drive still passes through the train 15, .13, 14, 16. A modified form of non-epicyclic train is described.
