Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. - A toothed or friction bevel train is movable as a whole to bring a friction clutch into action for solid driving, or a brake for a reduced speed. Planet gears m are supported by a cup-shaped carrier n secured to a driven shaft o. One side gear member c slides on a feather e on an extension a<1> of a driving-shaft a. The other side member l can be connected to a flywheel b on the shaft a by the clutch f, or held against rotation by moving a flange k<1> against a fixed braking surface. The flange k' is carried by a casing k, which extends from the gear l to a ring q<2> making an oil-tight joint with the carrier n. The gear train is journaled on a sleeve h, which is normally held by a spring s so as to maintain the clutch f in engagement. To bring in. the reduced speed, a thrust is imparted to a flat n<1> on the carrier n, so that the gear train and sleeve h are moved bodily to the left, the clutch f being disengaged, and the casing k braked. The invention is suitable for motorvehicles. Specification 123,703 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
