Abstract

329,199. Barbarou, M. J.-B. March 12, 1929, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing specially suitable for propelling aircraft comprises an epicyclic train which yields a solid drive and reduced speed, and in which the changing is cushioned by engagement of friction surfaces. Driving and driven shafts 1, 4 carry respectively an internallytoothed ring 2 and the carrier 5 of planets 42 meshing therewith. Sun gear 7 is loose on driven shaft 4, and upon its extended boss 8 slides a disc 10 which is moved to change speed. In position shown, the toothed periphery 15 of a disc 10 is locked to the fixed casing at 16 so that the gearing works to effect reduced speed. To change up, pressure oil admitted at 24 passes through duct 23 and presses pistons 21 to the right. Disc 10 is carried along and strikes ball-ended spring plungers 28 which bring a cone 30 on carrier 5 into engagement with a cone 3 on ring 2. This speeds up carrier 5 so that engagement of teeth 15 and 2 for the solid drive is facilitated. To change back, oil pressure is released, and springs 25 return disc 10. Before the teeth 15 engage teeth 16, a cone 14 on disc 10 engages a spring- pressed brake cone 32, by which the toothed engagement is cushioned. Exhaust gas may replace the oil.
