Abstract
425,031. Variable - speed gearing. CASSAGNE, G. R., Pavillon le Bouvreuil, Avenue Guynemer, Cazaux, Gironde, France. June 2, 1933, Nos. 16052 and 16053. Convention dates, Feb. 8 and March 27. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Groups XXVII and XXXIII] Relates to an epicyclic gear for aircraft or motor vehicles of the kind which is only operative when a part thereof is retarded or stopped by means for charging or supercharging the engine. The engine shaft 1, Fig. 1, drives through gears 2, 3 the carrier 5, 6 of stepped planets 10, 11 meshing respectively with a gear 25 on the propeller shaft 27 of an aeroplane and a gear 26 on a shaft 25 which drives the engine supercharger compressor. The drive is thus divided between the shafts 27, 28 so that the engine may be operated under optimum conditions at different loads or altitudes. The shafts 14 of the planets 10, 11 carry clutch members 15 adapted to be gripped between clutch members 16 on the carrier 5, 6 and members 17 carried by annular thrust-bearings 22 displaceable axially by arms 18 screwed to rods 19 rotatable in synchronism by a toothed ring 24. On engaging the clutches, the shafts 14 are locked and the epicyclic part of the gearing and the shafts 27, 28 rotate solid, only the reduction of the gears 2, 3 being obtained. In a modification for driving motor vehicles, the arms 18 are operated by eccentrics and a brake is provided for the shaft 27. The vehicle may be controlled by regulating the admission to and the delivery of air from the supercharger compressor. In a further modification, the propeller shaft 27 carries an internally toothed wheel gearing with the planets 10. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the following subjectmatter. In Fig. 9 (Cancelled) single planets 65 are employed which mesh with an internal gear 61 on the driven shaft 27 and with a sun 66 on a sleeve 67 connected through a planetary gear 68, 69, 71, 73 to the compressor shaft 28. It is stated that by sliding the internal wheel 71 so that its friction faces lock it to the planet carrier 73 or to the fixed casing forward and reverse drives respectively may be obtained. In a further arrangement with stepped planets, the engine is connected to the shaft 28 and the compressor to the shaft 1. This is also the case in Fig. 11 (Cancelled), the shaft 1 being connected by a clutch 85 to the compressor shaft 88, or to a fixed member 87 to give a reverse drive. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
