Abstract
447,786. Toothed gearing; variablespeed gearing; ball-bearings. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., and VIALE, S. M., Park Side, Coventry. Jan. 10, 1935, No. 860. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] Toothed gearing, more particularly for driving an aircraft propeller, comprises a plurality of trains, an element of one train being rigidly connected to an element of another train, and the pair of connected elements being supported on a universal bearing. In the form shown, the sun gear 20 of the planetary train 14, 15, 20 is connected to an internal gear 23 gearing with pinions 24 on fixed bearings 24a, the driven gear 26 of the second train being rigidly connected by a sleeve 17 to the planet carrier 16 of the first train. The annulus 14 of the first train is connected to the crank shaft 1 and the sleeve 1" to the propeller shaft 12. The connected gears 20, 23 are universally mounted on the sleeve 17 by a three-part spherical support comprising a ball-bearing 30 and two spherical rings 29. In assembling the support, one of the rings 29 is inserted at right-angles to its socket through a groove 31 and displaced laterally, the other ring is inserted and displaced in the opposite direction, the ballbearing 30 is inserted, and finally all three parts are turned through a right angle into the position shown. When the device is to function as a two-speed gear, the key 28 connecting the gear 26 to the sleeve 17 is replaced by an over-running clutch, which prevents the gear 26 from moving faster than the driven shaft. The reduction of the first train only may then be obtained by applying a brake to a brake-drum (not shown) mounted en the connected gears 20, 23. Specification 449,460, [Group XXXIV], is referred to.
