Abstract

444,899. Variable - speed gearing. THORNTON, A. A., 7, Essex Street, Strand, London.-(Cotal, J.; 5, Rue Poyer, Clichy, Seine, France) Sept. 28, 1934, No. 27841. [Class 80 (ii)] Comprises a variable-speed gear with two direct-driving and reducing electromagnetically controlled epicyclic trains P, Q, each having a sun gear, planets, and an annulus, in which the two rotary or clutching elcctromagnets A, D of the two trains P, Q, respectively, are on the outside fast on driving and driven shafts E, F, respectively, and the two corresponding stationary or braking electromagnets B, C are between the rotary electromagnets. The arrangement shown in Fig. 1 yields four forward speeds, and there is a simple mechanical sliding reversing- train O interposed between a first-motion shaft N and the driving hollow shaft E of the variable gearing. A loose carrier K carries the stepped planets K<1> of the train P and the annulus L of the train Q. The sun 6 of the train P drives and the annulus H carries an armature G common to the clutch A and the brake B. The planets M<1> of the train Q are on a carrier M fast on the driven shaft F, and the sun J carries an armature I common to the clutch D and brake C. For first speed, both trains reduce. For second and third, the trains reduce separately. Fourth speed is solid on both trains. At V is shown a spring dog adapted to be turned manually and lowered to engage a recess X in the driven electromagnet D so as to lock, say, the driven shaft of a vehicle against rotation. A pump is shown at 4 which pumps lubricating oil into a central conduit of the central shafts. This pump is identical with that described with reference to Fig. 3, of Specification 272,532, [Class 80 (ii)]. An arrangement is described in which the first-motion shaft N and the driven shaft F project from the same side of the gearbox, the latter being a sleeve upon the former. In an embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the first train P reverses as well as reduces when. the armature G is braked. This gearbox thus yields two forward speeds only, the direct and reduced speed of the train Q, each being reversible through the train P. Specification 332,789, [Class 80 (ii)], is referred to.
