Abstract

478,223. Variable - speed gearing. SCHMID, F. Nov. 2, 1936, No. 29810. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 5, 1937.] [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to planetary variable-speed gearing in which a driven shaft 1a, Fig. 1, carries stepped planets 3, 14 meshing respectively with a pinion 2 fast on a driving-shaft 1 and with a loose sun 15 the speed of which is regulated by throttling a plunger pump. The planets, which are supported in a box 5 fast on the shaft 1a, are triple in character, and steps 11 projecting on the driven-shaft side mesh with a loose sun 10 adapted to be held by a brake 12 so that a fixed ratio drive imparted to the shaft 1a is a reversed one. The sun 15 rotates loosely about a hub 5a of the carrier 5 and is integral with a disc 17 which carries three hydraulic cylinders 18, Fig. 2, which open inwardly towards an eccentric 22 fast on the hub 5a. Relative motion in the gearing caused by relative slip back of the shaft 1a causes relative turning of the eccentric 22 inside a strap 20 connected to three pistons 19 so that these pistons reciprocate radially and cause a circulation of oil in an annular connecting chamber 24. Throttling of this chamber 24 to produce varying drives upon the shaft 1a is effected by moving valves 23, Fig. 3, across the chamber from a muff 27, Fig. 1, which slides on the shaft 1 under control from a manual lever 29. Arrangements are described in which the annular circulation chamber is radially within the circle of hydraulic cylinders. In one of these, the eccentric is formed internally on a flange of the planetcarrying box. In another arrangement, the eccentric is centrally arranged but divided on each side of a cylinder block and there is a crosshead across the outer end of each cylinder. In this form, there is a pawl to prevent the carrier box from turning backwards, so that there is a definite low speed with increased torque. In this form also, suction valves are carried by the pump pistons to replenish the oil in throttled circulation.
