Abstract

523,771. Variable - speed gearing; clutches. WILLANS, K. W. Dec. 15, 1938, No. 34714/37. [Class 80 (ii)] A clutch device particularly for use in variable speed and reversing gearing, for securing loosely mounted gears to their shafts, comprises a number of radially arranged plungers 25, Fig. 3, in a cylinder block 23 secured to a shaft 7 which are adapted to be moved outwardly by fluid pressure to engage projections 34 on the internal surface of a drum 26 integral with a gear wheel 8 loosely mounted upon the shaft 7. The sides of the projections 34 and the ends of the plungers are bevelled so that slip is allowed at excessive loads, the pressure fluid supplied through conduits 19 and 20 being controlled as required for engagement of the clutch device and limited by means of pressure relief devices to determine the slipping point. The value of the fluid pressure may be controlled by adjustment of the relief valve or valves either manually or automatically in accordance with the governor or throttle control of the driving engine. A second set of the engaging plungers 25 may be provided to be brought into engagement after the first set and to provide a positive clutching action,by suitable shaping of the projections and ends of the plungers. The clutch devices of the invention are shown at 11 and 16 in Fig. 1 in a reversing gear mechanism comprising a driving shaft 7, a driven shaft 10 and a layshaft 14, and are adapted to clutch alternatively the gears 8 and 13 to their shafts. The mechanism of Fig. 1 is modified in Fig. 2 to give two forward speeds of the driven shaft 10. Any of the gears of the two trains may be provided loose and be adapted to be clutched to its shaft.
