530,039. Variable-speed gearing. DYSON, S. N., and MATTINSON, D. H. June 1, 1939, No. 15180/40. Divided out of 530,002. [Class 80 (ii)] In a change speed gear unit for internal-combustion engines in which co-axial shafts 10, 11 that can be alternatively clutched to a casing 12 geared to a driven shaft 15 are geared by wheels 16 .. 19 to a lay shaft 20, both shafts 10, 20 are provided with coupling means such as splines 21, 22 to be engaged by a driving member on the engine whereby alternative arrangements of the unit on the engine are available. In a modification a series of pairs of shafts 10, 11 are arranged around the lay shaft 20, the several casings 12 being geared to a single driven shaft 15 arranged co-axial with the lay shaft 20. In this case more than one of the shafts 10 may have splines 22 for engagement with a driving member on the engine.
